She’s All Peaches and Cream

I did not expect to be here so soon, and yet …

My hyperfocus appears to have kicked in and latched onto all things Fearne in Gucci.

I’ve caught up on Critical Role 3 – this post will contain spoilers for ‘Make it Fashion’ ep 12.

All you need to know is there’s a ball and the party goes shopping. Fearne buys a dress that Twitter user @MollieHasWords, in a reply to Hannah Freidrichs, described as Peaches and Cream Barbie.

Let’s talk about Peaches and Cream Barbie.

In the 80s, this was THE Barbie. My sister had her. I was most definitely NOT ALLOWED to touch (I was somewhere between 1 and 3 at this point, so in retrospect, fair). This in no way ended well.

Peaches and Cream Barbie was released in 1984/5 with the tagline “she’s as pretty as a peach blossom.” Peaches and Cream Barbie is a ‘Super Star Barbie’ (that late 70s through to early 90s big hair, big smile, Barbie look). Her gown is a triple layer peach tulle with ruffle and a purple under skirt. The bodice is made of a crystalised vinyl. The garment is cinched with peach with a flower details and the straps are in the same. The outfit is completed with a long ruffle boa – this was attached to the dress with press studs and could be arranged and looped in multiple ways – and diamond stud earrings and a solitaire necklace.

A reproduction was released in 2009/2010 sold as an opportunity to “reconnect with a long lost friend.” In 2011 she was released as a Hallmark ornament and later on a Funkopop – aside, I miss the 2001 Barbie website. It had a full catalogue and some great online games. It’s far too hard to find this background information without spending more time than I have here.

*MORE SPOILERY SPOILERS AHEAD*

However, this is how Ashley actually described the outfit (as badly transcribed by me):

Ashley: Beautiful white lace dress. Hoop on the bottom. Lace all the way. Maybe like a peach kind of sheer jacket with like a ruffle collar. Big sheer sleeves that come to here. Like a bed jacket.

Matt: It’s a Delish

Cast: oh, delish

Matt: That's her name, D'Lish

This is a D'Lish

Which makes me think of a marabou trimmed gown – the kind of late 40s to early 70s glamour that’s so opulent it’s almost comical.

[EDIT: The always peachy and extremely talented Eva Devore pointed out the Delish/D'Lish thing - even though the first feather robe I’ve posted here is a D’Lish. Eva has confirmed this with Matt, rendering the following twaddle invalid. I stand by my statement regarding certain Gucci stylists though]

But, as you know, we’ve established that Fearne is a Gucci girl, so we might consider this from the Fall/Winter 2016 collection.

As a Japanese scholar please note the fury with which I watched the fashion film. I hate whichever stylist put models in SHOES on tatami mats. If you were one of these stylists and you read this, please note that I LOATHE YOU.

TANGENT:The dekotora (decorated trucks) are cool though. I wrote about them in my thesis in the context of a short story called “Peony Snowflakes of Love” about a lesbian truck driver by Hashimoto Osamu and an explicit pornographic ladies comic from 2009 by Watanabe Yayoi about a lady trucker who gets revenge on the rival truckers who raped her and drives off into the sunset with a mysterious stranger. /TANGENT

I’m not sure about the white lacey hoop skirt – that just sounds like it will get caught in her hooves.

Even the model knows that this is a mistake.
